| 학교소개 및 특징 | 워싱턴 대학교 세인트 루이스(Washington University in St. Louis : Wash U 또는 WUSTL)는 미주리주(Missouri) 세인트 루이스(St. Louis)에 위치한 명문사립대학으로 1853년 William Greenleaf Eliot 등이 세운 Eliot Seminary에서 시작되었다. 1854년에 미국의 초대 대통령인 George Washington의 이름을 따서 Washinton Institute로 이름을 바꾸었다가 1856년 다시 Washington University로 학교명을 변경하였다. 그러나 George Washington의 이름을 딴 다른 대학들과의 혼동이 잦아 1976년부터 교명 뒤에 St. Louis를 붙여 Washington University in St. Louis를 학교의 정식명칭으로 사용하고 있다. 미국 내 최상위권에 속하는 연구중심 대학으로 학생 및 교수진들은 미국 전역 및 세계 110여 개국에서 모여든 인재들로 구성되어 있다. 이에 현재까지 22명의 노벨상 수상자를 배출하였으며, 그 중 9명은 노벨상을 수상하게 된 주요 연구를 WUSTL에서 진행하였다. 현재 6명의 노벨상 수상자를 교수진으로 보유하고 있으며, 풍부한 자산을 보유하고 있어 교육을 위한 설비 확충이나 빌딩건설 등에 투자를 아끼지 않는다. 또한 미국 내 학생을 위한 재정지원이 가장 우수한 대학 중 하나로 최고의 교육과 교육환경을 제공하는 대학이다. 현재 학부과정과 대학원과정을 모두 제공하는 인문사회과학대학(College of Art & Science / 대학원 과정은 Graduate School of Arts & Sciences에서 제공), 경영대학(Olin Business School), 디자인 & 시각예술대학(Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts - College of Architecture and Art), 공과대학(School of Engineering & Applied Science)과 대학원과정만을 제공하는 사회복지대학원(George Warren Brown School of Social Work), 법학대학원(School of Law), 의과대학원(School of Medicine), 그리고 평생교육대학(University College)으로 구성되어 있다. 이과계열이 강하며 그 중 생물학, 화학, 생화학, 신경의학, 유전자공학, 물리학, 등은 톱수준으로 전국적인 명성을 얻고 있다. 또한 의학대학원, 공학대학원, 경영대학원 등의 전문대학원도 유명한데, 특히 의과대학원은 U.S. Medical School Ranking에서 Harvard, Johns Hopkins, UPenn에 이어 4위를 차지할 정도로 그 우수함을 널리 인정받고 있다. 이 외 인문과학계열도 우수한 교육을 제공하고 있으며, 그 중에서도 영문학, 역사학, 심리학, 건축학 등이 탁월한 것으로 알려져 있다. |
