| 학교소개 및 특징 | 미국 텍사스주(州) 브라조스 카운티(Brazos County)의 칼리지스테이션(College Station)에 있는 주립 종합대학교이며 텍사스A&M대학교 시스템의 본교입니다. 1876년 10월 4일에 텍사스주의 랜드그랜트칼리지인 텍사스농공대학(Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas)으로 설립하였으며, 당시 설립 목적은 백인 남성에게 농업과 군사기술을 교육시키기 위한 것이었습니다. 1960년대에 제임스 얼 러더 총장의 역임 시기에 인종차별 정책을 철폐하였으며 교육부분과 조직이 확대됨에 따라 1963년에 현재의 이름으로 변경 하였습니다. 주 캠퍼스는 휴스턴 중심부에서 약 130km 떨어진 칼리지스테이션 시가지에 위치하며, 칼리지스테이션은 대학 설립 이후 기차로 통학하던 학생들이 내리던 곳이라는 의미의 ‘대학 역'이 이후 그대로 도시명이 되었다. 멕시코만(灣) 연안의 갤버스턴섬 북동쪽 끝 갤버스턴(Texas A&M University at Galveston)과 중동 국가 카타르(Texas A&M at Qatar)에 분교가 있습니다. 전 학생의 1/5은 캠퍼스 내에서 기숙한며, 부속시설로는 조지 부시 도서관, 미술관, 기상대, 태풍연구소, 풍동, 시각연구소, 원자로, 대양파도실험소 등이 있습니다. 볼리비아 대통령 호르헤 키로가 라미레스, 파나마 대통령 마르틴 토리호스 등이 졸업했습니다. 1876년도에 설립된 주립대학으로 여러모로 University of texas, Austin 과 비교되는 대학이며, 5천 에이커의 방대학 대학 캠퍼스에 약 5만명의 학생이 재학하고 있는 매우 큰 규모의 대학입니다. 4500명의 외국 유학생들이 재학하고 있고 상대적으로 오스틴에 비해 한국학생들의 선호도는 적은편이나, 학생들 대부분이 텍사스주 출신으로 보수적인 성향을 띄고 있고 대규모 대학이다 보니 교수와 학생들 간의 친밀도를 찾기는 쉽지 않다. 지역적으로 휴스콘에서 멀지 않은 곳에 위치해 있고 대학이 속해 있는 도시는 도시 전체가 대학도시라고 할 수 있다. |
