Elementary FEB 2024 (Burnaby School District)
ÆÄÀÏ
As we recently have been inundated with elementary applications, we wish to inform you that we are reassessing space availability in specific grades in our elementary schools for February 2024. As such, we are currently not accepting applications for the grade K - 7 program. We are still open for our secondary school program, grade 8 ? 12.
We may re-open our elementary program applications at a later date once we are confident there will be space. If we do this, we will let you know ahead of the opening time.
As we find ourselves on June 14th 2023 at the end of another successful school year, we¡¯d like to give all of our valued agents 3 key updates and reminders in regard to our applications/admissions.
1. We will be closing the September 2023 intake as of June 30th, except for secondary students currently holding a valid study permit or short term students not needing to apply for a study permit. For those cases, please contact our office directly for space availability at international@burnabyschools.ca .Please note that while we do allow late arrivals, there is no option to defer intakes should the study permit be delayed. At this time of year for students requiring a homestay, we recommend first looking into homestay availability prior to contacting us.
2. As detailed in our last newsletter, we are opening the February 2024 applications on June 15th 2023.
3. If you have any February 2024 applications submitted before June 15th, those will have been pushed back to your side, so they will appear ¡°In-Progress¡±. This means it requires you to resubmit the application on June 15th when we open the applications for February 2024. This is only fair so that your application doesn¡¯t jump the queue.

We wanted to remind you that homestays are very limited for September 2022 intake. If your student has already been accepted into our program and you have not arranged a homestay placement, please ensure you do so immediately.
If you have not yet submitted an application but it is still in progress, we recommend you contact a homestay company before you submit the student application to us and:
Confirm with your preferred homestay company they are willing to place your student;
Find out near which schools(s) the homestay company still has suitable families.
Once you have the above, please submit our application and put the preferred school(s) as suggested by the homestay company. Remember that currently Alpha and Burnaby Central are both full, however.
Note that once the student has been accepted by Burnaby, currently there is a 3-week payment deadline. Please make sure before that payment deadline you have confirmed that the homestay company of your choice can place your student. Note there is no special refund should you pay our invoice then not be able to find a homestay. Our regular Refund Policy applies.
Langara Homestay is now closed for applications. Please see the following instructions:
If you have been admitted to our program and indicated that you want a Langara homestay, you need to immediately contact Langara at homestay@langara.ca as they have limited families still available.
If you have started your Burnaby application but have not yet completed it (in progress) or are about to submit an application, Langara Homestay is no longer an option.
For your information, we have attached information on other homestay companies options with families in Burnaby. As homestays in Burnaby are very limited, we ask that only students who have pre-arranged accommodation apply to our program.
We appreciate your confidence in our program and hope that your students can join us in February. If not in February, we will be opening up September 2022 intake on October 18th!
We have just been informed by Langara Homestay that they are now full for September 2021 intake and are not accepting any more homestay applications. We know not all of you use their services, so apologies if this has come to you in error.
For your information, we are attaching a list of some local homestay companies. There are, of course, several other homestay companies in the Metro Vancouver area not on this list. You will have to contact the homestay agency directly. Fees may differ from those of Langara Homestay.

Arrival Dates & Orientation.
This year school starts on September 7th, however there is still a 14-day mandatory quarantine in place, therefore we request that students arrive by August 23rd to be on time for school. Ideally between August 20-23rd for arrival.
More information to come on orientation details. Exciting news is that Burnaby will be providing online ESL classes for the students during their 2-week online orientation period.
Visa/ Study Permit processing times.
Worried about the estimated time on the IRCC website? Many countries we¡¯ve gotten feedback that the process is much faster than what is indicated on the website. Please be reminded however that we DO allow late arrivals, that is okay. We have not made a decision to allow deferrals at this time.
SummerSession
This is available to current international students in Burnaby, not for new students.
Please remind students & parents, that if they want to sign up for summer courses through the Burnaby School District Continuing Education program sd41 does offer a variety of credit courses over the summer. Many students may choose not to travel home this summer, if that is the case, this would be a great use of their time. Secondary registration starts early April and I want to tell you about it now because it may fill up quickly this year if more students stay for summer. https://burnabyschools.ca/summersession/
How is British Columbia doing?
Unlike some other Canadian provinces British Columbia at the k-12 level school has been in person face to face since June 2020. There were only 2.5 months last year (Mid-March to End of May) that our students were learning remotely. At this time, we fully expect September 2021 to be running face to face in person. Most school clubs are running, some sports are not yet running. We do not yet know if we will be running on a quarterly system or a semester system etc. I will give you an update as soon as a decision is made. We are and will continue to follow the Provincial Health and Safety requirements. September may look different as most of the population at that time will have been vaccinated.
Thank you for your continued efforts to recruit and support students through challenging times. We welcome your applications. I am always available for questions and if you like for seminars or other online events.
SPACE AVAILABLILITY SEPTEMBER 2020for secondary schools:
*Please note at this time of year if you wish to choose Moscrop or Central as a choice on the application form you will be put on a waitlist and if there are any withdraws we may be able to get a seat for you now. As the year goes on it will become less likely that there will be any cancellations.
*More seats at the newly renovated Alpha Secondary in the beautiful Brentwood area have opened up to us!

Elementary space available: Please see online application page. There is a list of schools that are not accepting applications. You may select 3 schools not on that list. Please make clients aware that school choice for elementary is not guaranteed. To help you choose a school:
When you send a student here that is expecting to graduate we need to do credit transfer (grades 10,11). For this we need the updated transcripts, especially if you applied early. I have a list of 15 students for whom I don¡¯t have updated transcripts for so I will be contacting you individually. Just a reminder. I also understand in many of your areas schools may still be closed due to COVID19 which we understand. With the latest 2019/20 school report our counsellor can start to prepare a program for the student and try to get them in the classes they want and need based on that update. Once we assess the English at orientation some final adjustments may be needed.
Students will still have to bring their final school report, in home language and English to give to their school counsellor during orientation week in August to make that final credit transfer.

Please make sure custodians understand what a custodian¡¯s responsibilities are:
