We wanted to offer you an update on the current situation in Ireland. Much like the rest of the world, the situation in Ireland is under constant review by the Irish government and we are hopeful it will be for the better.
The government announced a phased easing of public health restrictions, starting on the 12th April 2021. Language schools, adult learning centres and universities will remain primarily online for the time being. The measures announced will continue up to the 4th of May, at which point the situation will be revised and further areas of activities will be taken under consideration.
Galway Cultural Institute
Due to the current government guidelines, all GCI classes will remain online until such time as the current restrictions are lowered. All classes will be accessible via Moodle and Zoom as before.
International students are being encouraged by government not to travel to Ireland at this time. However, the country is not closed for what is called essential travel and we are hopeful that reopening will begin to happen from May onwards.
INIS is advising pprospective students seeking to enter the State to wait until in-person tuition has been resumed. Failure to do so may result in such students being refused leave to land and being refused registration. We are constantly updating our website with relevant information and latest official communication if you want to find out more details.
With regards to current procedures and measures in place, we have compiled a guide on our website with the latest information for language schools around the protocols prepared as dictated by the government. ELE Protocols - https://www.gci.ie/student-guide/
Vaccination in Ireland
The rollout of COVID-19 vaccines is underway with nearly 1 million vaccines being administered already. It is expected that four in five adults will have received at least one dose of vaccine by the end of June.
We will keep you updated on any further announcements or changes regarding this. All decisions regarding classes will, of course, be made with Public Health advice to ensure the safety of both our students and staff.

We hope that you are all keeping well and safe.
As you know GCI moved to online classes mid-October as directed under Level 5, while this was not our ideal scenario we are glad to see that our students have been working well in their online classes - achieving their language goals regarding international exam study and even progressing on to new levels! We appreciate that this is a challenging time, nevertheless, it is a good time to focus on new objectives and to take something positive from the opportunity to learn and study in a new way.
Presently, there is a change to the level status in Ireland and, from today 1st December 2020, the country moves from Level 5 to Level 3 (with some exceptions) under the Government¡¯s Resilience and Recovery 2020-2021 Plan for Living with COVID-19. This new level allows for adult education, which includes English Language Education, to open with protective measures and limit congregation as far as possible.
Therefore, we are happy to say that we can return to face to face classes from 7th December until our school closes for the holiday period on December 18th. The school will be closed during the festive holidays from 21st December 2020 until 3rd January, with classes resuming on 4th January 2021.
We are very much looking forward to seeing all our students in person again and getting them back in the classroom . We will continue with all of our COVID measures - sanitising on arrival, daily temperature checking, social distancing and asking everyone to wear masks at all times.
In order to limit congregation, the class times will be staggered as before - classes will be on Monday to Friday at the following times initially:
¡¤08.45 - 12.00
¡¤09.00 - 12.15
¡¤09.25 - 12.30
Cambridge Exams
As an authorised exam centre and for the first time this year, GCI will facilitate Cambridge examinations on site on 11th December 2020. Offering on the day both FCE and CAE exams, GCI will enable both GCI students and external candidates to sit the exams and turn their English learning into effective practice. Our academic team has worked closely with Cambridge English to arrange the examinations, following all obligatory Covid measures.
Galway Business School
Following Public Health advice to ensure the safety of both our students and staff, Galway Business School will continue to deliver classes online for the remainder of semester one. We will keep you updated on any further announcements or changes regarding this. All decisions regarding classes will, of course, be made with Public Health advice to ensure the safety of both our students and staff.
Thank you so much for your patience and cooperation during this very difficult period for our industry.
We are, as always, available to address any queries which you might have.
