Today, we had a lovely surprise. Rodrigo, a student at NESE last year, came to visit us to thank NESE and share his great news: He was accepted to Harvard Law School - into the LLM program, and he will start classes next week! He wanted us to know that NESE's courses, and NESE's Intensive TOEFL Program, in particular, were an essential part of his success - and we simply had to share this news with you!

Please remember that NESE will soon offer the same TOEFL classes on-line: https://nese.edu/nese-on-line.html

Congratulations to Rodrigo!! We are so proud that he was a NESE student, and we wish him the greatest success in his future!

With kind regards,

What an Opportunity!

NESE's brilliant Open Talk Club leader, Samuel Odamah, is a Harvard Hero. Because of this, he is permitted to invite a few friends to attend the Harvard Hero ceremony and reception that is held each year - at Harvard of course.

However because the ceremony is an invitation only event, Samuel can only take a handful of Open Talk Club participants. Usually, if they arrive on time, the students have an opportunity to sit in the beautiful Sanders Theater and watch the President of Harvard read the award citations of about 51 Harvard Heroes.

After the ceremony, Samuel takes the NESE group to Annenburg Hall for an amazing reception with Harvard staff. Access to Annenburg Hall is restricted most of the year, as the space is used as a Harvard College freshman cafeteria. Given this, Samuel uses this window of opportunity to invite NESE and other Harvard friends to see this magnificent and inspirational space on this one special day. Simply, it is a time for all involved to be inspired - and as always, we are inspired by what Samuel does for NESE students.

Thank you Samuel!

Guest Speaker Program

Each session, NESE invites a guest speaker to give a presentation during students' Conversation & Listening class. Speakers discuss a wide range of topics. Some recent speakers include: a Harvard employee with experience in the US Marine Corps, a genetic scientist, a local police officer, bankers from a local bank, college admissions advisors, performers from the Boston String Quartet, and a theatrical stage manager. Students receive practice listening to a different native speaker, asking questions in natural situations, and learning new vocabulary about the topic. They also get to meet these local community members and learn about their lives.

Club Meetings

NESE offers a selection of student clubs each session. Students can choose to sign up for as many club meetings as they wish. Clubs are usually led by a NESE teacher or staff member. The student club service is free for students, although they may need to pay for the activity that the club attends, such as a small admission fee at a museum.

Volunteer Program

Each session, NESE brings interested students to volunteer at a local home for the elderly. We have also compiled an extensive list of local organizations that students can contact to arrange individual volunteering opportunities. In addition, teachers or staff members may lead volunteering opportunities as they become available. For example, a teacher recently brought students to volunteer at a soccer camp for children.
