학교가 위치한 워싱턴 주의 풀먼 (Pullman)은 인구 25,000명의 조용하고 안전한 작은 도시로
Palouse 지역의 언덕지대에 위치하고 있습니다. 시애틀에서 약 280마일, 포틀랜드에서 350마일,
스포켄에서 80마일, 풀맨공항에서 2마일 거리에 위치하고 있으며, 아이다호 주의 경계까지도
아주 가까워 아이다호주의 Moscow까지 20분이면 갈 수 있습니다.
또한 도시의 대부분이 학생과 교직원인 학원도시라 범죄율이 아주 낮으며 자동차문이나
집의 문을 잠구지 않아도 될만큼 안전합니다. 이 곳에서 가장 큰병원도 학교 안에 있는 병원이고
경찰서와 소방서도 학교 중간에 위치하고 있다. 즉 대학교의 중앙이 이 도시의 중심부입니다. |
워싱턴 주립 대학교(Washington State University)는 워싱턴주의 공립 연구 중심 대학교로
1890년 12월 28일 풀먼에 설립되어 1892년 1월 13일에 개교하였습니다.
설립 당시 학교 이름은 워싱턴 농업 대학 및 과학부(Washington Agricultural College and School of Science)였으나,
1905년 워싱턴 주립 대학(State College of Washington)으로,1959년 지금의 이름인 워싱턴 주립 대학교(Washinigton State University)로 개명하였습니다.
공유지 교부 대학교로서 워싱턴주 정부로부터 서북부 태평양 연안의 농업 및 과학 연구용으로 769km²의 땅을 교부받았습니다.
이 대학은 식품·농업, 청정기술, 뇌·행동·수면, 경영, 교육, 에너지, 공학, 환경, 보안 분야의 연구를 진행하고 있습니다.
부설연구소로 생식연구소, 수면·행동연구센터, 정신질환연구소, 사회·환경정의센터, 에너지시스템혁신센터, 수자원연구센터,
재료공학연구소 등이 있다습니다. 그리고 도서관, 미술관, 박물관, 야외 미술전시장, 식물원 등의 부속시설을 운영하며
학생들이 운영하는 미디어로 대학신문사, 라디오방송국이 있습니다.
캠퍼스로는 제1캠퍼스인 풀먼캠퍼스 외에
밴쿠버캠퍼스, 스포케인캠퍼스, 트라이시티즈캠퍼스,에버렛캠퍼스를 두고 있습니다.
스포캔·트리시티스·밴쿠버 캠퍼스에서는 주로 석사, 박사 학위과정을 진행하며
전세계에서 원격학위과정을 통해 10개 학사과정과 온라인 MBA 과정을 제공합니다.
